A Model For Achieving AYP

Covert Middle School has been on the U.S. Department of Education Failing Schools list for failing to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress for the past three years.  As a result of Covert's initiative and the formation of a partnership with the Van Buren Research and Development Foundation, Covert Middle School was removed from the AYP list in 2004.

The Foundation placed a former math teacher in the district to assist the fifth through ninth grade staff, with additional focus at the 8th grade level, in training staff in a research based model of instructional delivery.  The consultant interviewed the staff to ascertain the following findings:

bullet

The teacher's understanding regarding the alignment of district curriculum to the Michigan Benchmarks and Standards

bullet

Teacher's access to Michigan Curriculum Standards and Benchmarks

bullet

The specific teaching strategies identified that will enable student achievement of the standards

bullet

The teacher's implementation of the curriculum as aligned to the Michigan Standards

bullet

The compatibility of the methodology employed by the teacher with the design of the curriculum and the potential for successful student outcomes

bullet

The teacher's employment of a suitable method of assessment, prescription and development of the next appropriate learning event for the student, including remediation to enhance and sustain academic growth for the individual student

bullet

The teacher's clear understanding of the grade levels at which specific standards and skills are taught and expected to be mastered

bullet

The teacher's perception of the major issues affecting student learning and the adopted strategies for mediating those issues

bullet

The building administrator's perception of the issues that are affecting student performance and possible strategies to resolve the issues

After completing the assessment of the instructional program, the consultant trained teachers in utilizing a specific researched based instructional model.  The evaluation of the process employed and the model utilized produced results that suggest that student growth was directly related to the intervention.

Results

The growth in Math MEAP results in 2004 for Covert students were the highest in a three year period at the 8th grade level, and doubled from the results the previous year.
